HP EliteBook 8440p Screen Won’t Come Out Of Sleep Mode, RESOLVED

HP EliteBook 8440p screen will go to sleep while you are working on the laptop and won’t wake back up, even if you try to press keys or move the mouse.  This is a well known problem with this particular HP product. In other forums, people will say that the way to solve this problem is to put it on a docking station which is incorrect. The only reason it works on a docking station is because of the external video. If you plug another monitor into the computer it will quickly recover, but after it has been removed the problem reoccurs.

The best way to resolve this problem is take your laptop off any external display, then change the refresh rate for your built-in monitor from 60Hertz to 40Hertz. The video quality won’t be as great, but this will keep your laptop screen from blacking out on you whenever you are ready to use it. To COMPLETELY solve this problem without changing the settings on your screen is to send your computer back to HP and have them replace your motherboard or the computer all together.

Macbook Pro Mouse click will not select what I have clicked on and is basically unresponsive

I replaced the keyboard and had to replace the touchpad on my Macbook Pro and now its not working.  Every time I click it will not select what I have clicked on and is basically unresponsive, it even messes up any other mouse I attach.  The arrow still moves around but the actual clicking is not working so I used a USB mouse and avoided the track pad all together.  I looked on line and came up with many people having the same issue.  None of them worked:  Reset SMC, PVRAM, close screen for 60 seconds, and reloading OS, all to no avail.

The actual solution was the adjustment screw under the battery had worked itself down and wouldn’t let the mouse disengage.  When you remove the battery, look toward the bottom of the track pad.  There is a T17 adjustment screw.  Just turn it till you can hear the click of the mouse and everything will work again.

This computer is configured to require a password in order to start up

startup password virus

When you get scammers calling claiming to be from Microsoft and they want access to your computer to fix a virus, they really are not from Microsoft. They will tell you that your computer has somehow contacted them and that you have a virus.  I have heard people tell me they got the call while the computer was turned off, and believe it or not they will fall for this complete SCAM.  When they gain access they will install a program that locks you out of your computer by putting a rogue registry file that will show prior to the Windows boot menu as shown above:  login box asking for a password you never set. This box comes up before the windows logon screen regardless if you have a preset password or not. You cannot bypass it by starting up in any option of Safe Mode – not even Safe Mode with Command Prompt. This is what you do to fix it.

You have to find a bootable utility disk like ERD Commander or Hirens Boot Disk, Boot up from the disk, not the infected hard drive and what you will do is backup the current registry files and recover the most recent registry backup which is available.

Navigate to %SystemRoot%/Windows/System32/config

You need to make a backup of the Following Files First

– Default
– System
– Security
– SAM
– Software

Then Navigate to Windows/System32/config/Regback

Copy all the contents from that folder to the previous config folder and say Yes to overwrite existing files.

Restart Your computer.

Windows will come up with a checkdisk prompt and you will let it run and do its thing.

*If check disk doesn’t run automatically you can run it manually by typing ‘chkdsk /r’ in the run command.

Windows will then logon normally without prompting you for the virus password.

The proxy server isn’t responding, Trojan Proxy Server keeps changing Lan Settings back everytime.

A client brought me a computer that would not get on the internet in any browser.  Someone told him that he could use another browser, but of course that wouldn’t work considering that all software browsers get their setting from Windows Explorer anyway.  If the Lan Settings are using a proxy, and if you change them and they revert each time, then you most likely have a virus and until you change the settings for good there will be no browser that you can use.

In my client’s case the proxy was 127.0.0.1 on port 8877 and formed <-loopback> in Lan Settings under Internet Options in Windows 8, Explorer 11.

I first removed the viruses using the malware removal tools at http://www.youhaveavirus.com and all programs recently added in control panel.  I then opened the registry with regedit and searched for <-loopback> and deleted everything that had proxy associated with the search result.  Next I tried to reset the browser in Internet Options again.  It still reverted back to the proxy no matter what.  The proxy box would be checked every time I closed and reopened Lan Settings.  The fix was simple after this.  All you need to do is right click on Internet Explorer (THE BIG BLUE E), left click run as administrator and the browser will work and of course the proxy settings will now remain unchecked.  Hope this helps everyone.
