How to enable the F8 key to start Safe Mode in Windows 8

Many people have asked me how to do this. Rather than take the time to explain the process to everyone who asks me, I looked and found a perfectly written article by Lawrence Abrams on the www.bleepingcomputer.com website.

“Windows 8 introduced a new boot loader that decreased the time that it takes Windows 8 to start. Unfortunately, in order to do this Microsoft needed to remove the ability to access the Advanced Boot Options screen when you press the F8 key when Windows starts. This meant that there was no easy and quick way to access Safe Mode anymore by simply pressing the F8 key while Windows starts. Instead in order to access Safe Mode, you would need to either start Windows 8 and then tell it to restart into safe mode or for Windows to fail to start, where you could then tell Windows reboot again into safe mode. Regardless of how you did, it became a 2-3 step process to access the Windows 8 Safe Mode rather than a 1-step process that we have become familiar with.

In my opinion having access to diagnostic tools quickly and easily is more important than shaving some seconds off of the time it takes Windows to starts. With that said, this tutorial will explain how to enable the F8 key in Windows 8 so you can quickly and easily access the Safe Mode boot options and other diagnostic tools. As a bonus, by enabling this option on a dual-boot system with multiple operating systems, you will now find it easier to select the operating system you wish to use when you start your computer.

To enable the F8 key in Windows 8 you will first need to open an elevated command prompt. To do this you can follow the steps in this tutorial:

How to open an Elevated Command Prompt in Windows 8

When the elevated command prompt is open you will be at the C:\Windows\System32> prompt. To enable F8 in Windows 8 you need to type the following in the command prompt and then press the Enter key.

bcdedit /set {default} bootmenupolicy legacy

Once you enter the above text, your command prompt should look like:

enable-f8-command-prompt

Enabling F8 key in Windows 8

Once the command has been enter as shown above, press the Enter key on your keyboard. If you entered the command correctly, Windows will report that the “The operation completed successfully.”. You now need to restart your computer for the change to go into effect. With this settings configured, you can now press F8 while Windows 8 starts in order to access Safe Mode and other Advanced Boot options.

If you would like to disable the F8 key and go back to the original Windows 8 setting you can open an elevated command prompt and enter the following command:

bcdedit /set {default} bootmenupolicy standard

Once you enter the above command, press Enter on your keyboard. If you entered the command correctly, Windows will report that the “The operation completed successfully.” and you should now restart your computer. The F8 key will now be disabled in Windows 8.”

Alureon Virus – Trojan:Win32/Alureon

The Alureon virus is special.

This guy changes everyday. He actually morphs and makes me really think of better ways to deal with him. This guy is the reason I am in business. He is the only person in the world who is actually there for the fun of it, and not for money. I tell people every day that if you think viruses are there to mess with you; you’d would be wrong. They are about monetary gain. Not this guy. He is the ultimate. He is the “ONE”.

You have to look for him, and when you find him, God help you. Sometimes I feel I have to play God; I pray for all of you who find the Alureon virus. The sad thing is you never did anything to get this virus. I am always told it just appeared out of nowhere. Wow. He creates a hidden partition and they never clicked or did anything. I am actually impressed. I have followed this virus over the past ten years. Never seen one that changed as much. Most people move on. The Alureon virus moves forward.

People ask me, “Why do people do this”?

The Alureon virus is that one that I can’t answer. He’s not a kid anymore. I believe he was the 12-year-old that you all think he was. He has grown up now. You found the one virus that is actually hard to find and devastating to get. He is good and he knows it. But nobody can say how he got there. Kudos my friend. I appreciate the business. You are a difficult one.

Fix Ransom Virus Cryptolock

This is the new virus that is holding your files for ransom.

How to beat the Ransom Virus Crypto

  • The best way to beat this guy is to take your drive and save your data to something off the network, because it will encrypt all attached drives. You can then reload Windows and you are safe.
  • Alternatively, you can simply change your clock. The genius never thought of that.

It offers you a get out of jail free card for $300.00. Not bad until you don’t pay. Guess what? It’s no joke. Your files will be encrypted whether you pay or not. Dr. Web says he can fix them. I wouldn’t bet on it though. I tried Advanced Excel repair tool, which costs $89.00, and they couldn’t fix the files because of too much damage.

If Dr. Web “CAN” fix them then he produced the Cryptolock Virus himself. I don’t think I would give him my personal information. I have used the advanced repair tools in the past, and they work as advertised. They don’t work on this one though. Dr. Web does it for $25.00 a file, or so he says. Try your luck. I think you would be dealing with the devil personally.

I saved three companies this week by changing date and time. Amazing how simple some things are. Wouldn’t you agree?

How can someone pull this off and forget about a small detail like changing the date and time? Good virus, but an amateur programmer. Come on now. You give them a time and they can actually set the clock back and destroy your deviant thoughts. You should be on “Americas Dumbest Cyber Criminal Videos”. Maybe we can do a website called ADCCV…

My number is on the wesite.  That’s how you contact me.  I answer 24/7.
